Global blueberry production has reached record levels, and the supply geography has become increasingly diversified. Discover key trends, challenges, and opportunities in the fresh blueberry market for the coming years.

The global blueberry market is entering a new phase of development, marked by unprecedented growth in production capacities and expanded supply geography. The total area under blueberry cultivation increases by at least 10% annually, and the total production volume has more than doubled over the last decade, reaching 1.78 million tonnes in 2023 and surpassing 2 million tonnes in 2024.

Key Trends:

  • Global Production Growth:In 2023, the total cultivated area reached 267,000 hectares, up by 7.2% compared to 2022. Latin America holds the largest share (42%) of global blueberry plantings, driven by major investments in Peru, Mexico, and Chile. The Asia-Pacific region, particularly China, is also rapidly expanding, becoming the largest producer by volume.

  • Shift in Consumption Patterns:Initially, major blueberry-producing countries focused on export markets. However, there is now a growing emphasis on domestic markets, which may significantly alter the global demand-supply structure.

  • Year-Round Availability:Thanks to expanded production in the Southern Hemisphere and the use of greenhouse technologies, fresh blueberries have become available year-round, solidifying their position as a global commodity.

Challenges and Opportunities:

Despite the rapid production growth, the industry faces several challenges:

  • Macroeconomic Factors:Inflation, high logistics costs, deglobalization trends, and labor shortages create new difficulties in balancing supply and demand.

  • Market Competition:Increased production in countries focusing on domestic markets may remain unnoticed globally for now but could cause significant market disruptions in the future.

  • Need for Innovation:To maintain competitiveness, producers must implement new technologies, improve logistics, and adapt to evolving consumer preferences.

Conclusion:

The global fresh blueberry market is experiencing robust growth and dynamic changes. For successful development during the 2025–2030 period, growers and exporters must closely monitor market trends, adapt to new conditions, and embrace innovative solutions.
